U.S. can remain economically strong with renewable energy sources?

I understand that at present if our economy is to suddenly adapt to a green economy would have a serious crisis. On the one hand, energy renewables are not very reliable, and may need to be subsidized similar to how ethanol is subsidized. However, with sufficient research and development, could the U.S. economy runnng remain strong or become even louder, almost exclusively on renewable energy?

Clearly, the economy will be stronger. not sent $ 700 billion abroad. We would have one trillion used for other purposes. Most renewable (wind and solar) is not consistent. But the national average, is much longer. However, with something like 3% of the market at the moment, we have a long way to go before there is significant progress.
