What are the implications of domestic energy production from BP's oil spill?

One thing that worries me, as a result The BP oil spill in progress (the top-kill method to try to stop the leak apparently not) is the way that restricts the United States could become in that the exploration of our own oil and other fossil fuels is concerned.
