What are the implications of domestic energy production from BP's oil spill?
One thing that worries me, as a result The BP oil spill in progress (the top-kill method to try to stop the leak apparently not) is the way that restricts the United States could become in that the exploration of our own oil and other fossil fuels is concerned. More than half of our oil and imported, many countries are strongly hostile to America – and, I think, a vulnerability Most of what we have. After all, green technologies are being widely promoted, what I saw, not economically viable.
It is important to note, which is not usually the case when discussing these issues publicly, that the maintenance our current level of industry activity is itself a losing proposition. The laws of nature that the decree of oil imports will be less and less available in the future, as fuel for heating. In fact, U.S. production oil peaked in 1970 under-48 and the more we can do now is to put some hits on the downhill. The problem is that all efforts to _slow_ today – to put in a new field or the use of advanced technology – also tomorrow _accelerate_ decline. Examples are some of the real world: (1) The interval between art discoveries in the North Sea and the peak of production (~ 1970, 1999) was shorter than, say, the interval between discovery and production of advanced technology in the U.S. under-48 (1930, 1970), reflecting technology more peaks used in the operation of the old and the costs of offshore production, which tends to generate a faster sampling resources so that investors can recover these high costs faster. The production of North Sea oil now down over 40 percent peak in 1999 -. (2) Alaska field Dear particular oil in Prudhoe Bay, the largest oil field discovered in North America north of Mexico – which was also widely used advanced technologies, quickly went into terminal decline at a rate of about 10 percent for ten years and only eleven years after its first production. (3) the offshore Cantarell field in Mexico reached the highest rate of daily production in all the fields in the world after Pemex, in cooperation with Bechtel, built the worlds largest factory in the separation of nitrogen. The nitrogen is injected into wells to stimulate production of this relatively heavy oil. The highest remain high only 3 or four years before the country entered into collapsing fast – at 20 percent a year or more per year. Meanwhile, Pemex riding with a heavy debt related to its investment in plant nitrogen. Horizon Deep Sea disaster toll no doubt the pressure for drilling at sea, including "deep water" oil and efforts to open currently restricted areas of the continental shelves. But it is important to note that fields such as deepwater productive_ _most, BP Thunder Horse field, producing only a tenth of the maximum rate of Cantarell, then decrease rapidly. And apparently, on the basis of the drilling was done in the past, the prospects of finding significant quantities of oil or gas on the coast Northwest Southern California and the southern coast of Maine is not so great. The west coast of Florida, for example, has a little gas, but little or no oil. Maine Offshore probably has oil, but the fields in Atlantic Canada show, this will be short lived. Therefore, even in the absence of impact of the disaster in the Gulf, the results that you care – the wind is limited in our ability to obtain cooking oil – is something that has to face. The constraint is simply imposed by nature. As a 'green' solutions, I think your intuitions are reasonable. What seems difficult for most people to do, however, is to address two sets facts clearly – again implying that our current lifestyle is not sustainable. The linked report Heinberg then I think it is helpful in this regard.
